As Long As We Endure
The dance company, Ephemerui, known for their unique improvisatory approach to dance has created an astonishingly beautiful piece called As Long As We Endure. It is a 70 min piece of structured improvisation, but the amount of subtlety and communication they have while performing is quite impressive.
ALASWE makes a bold statement about the ideas of motion and humanity through use of sensual (not sexual!) movements bordering on the downright brutal and animalistic.
I have the privilege and challenge of designing a soundscape to help frame these ideas. The sound will be created by electronically manipulating the sounds of the actual dance, i.e. feet landing on the ground, sliding, and any other sounds created by movement. Just as the motion is a structured improvisation, the sound will have a structure in the larger scope of the work, but the smaller details will occur on the spot through real-time sequencing. This piece marks many firsts for me including performing on the computer and responding to the dancers. I am extremely excited to see the results and to create a sonic universe that can match the intensity of the choreography.
As Long As We Endure premieres at the Bushwick Open Studios Festival on June 4 at 8pm on the roof of 330 Melrose in Brooklyn. Subsequent performances are June 5 at 8pm and June 6 at 7pm.
