July 2010 Updates

July 14th, 2010

This summer has been quite busy for me so far (which is nice!). From creating the sound score to Benn Rasmussen’s As Long As We Endure, we are collaborating again to create a work for the Under Exposed dance festival.

Probably the most exciting thing about creating this work is the fact that we are creating and rehearsing as a group in Meredith Monk’s loft. It’s quite a surreal experience going there for rehearsal’s, but it’s a great environment for this type of work. The piece will premiere on July 21 at Dixon Place.

Violinist Josh Henderson will be performing Cataclysm as part of Bang on a Can’s Summer Festival at MASS MoCa. He will be playing it on one of the self-produced programs. Josh will also be programming it on a fall concert in NYC as well. He truly understands the piece and I look forward to hearing his interpretation hopefully many times after the festival.

Finally, in late July and early August, I will be working closely with Melanie Sehman to create a solo percussion piece featuring the vibraphone. She will tour with the piece for the 2010-2011 season. There is also a possibility her duo, Proper Glue Duo (with husband Steve Sehman), will be performing my percussion duet, In Dark Masses, Slowly Rising.

I’ve officially been in NYC for one year and one month as of today, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how my music career is developing. From studying with Tristan Murail and George Lewis at Columbia University to rehearsing this latest dance collaboration in Meredith Monk’s loft, I never imagined such things could be possible. While I am deeply grateful for such opportunities and such supportive people in my life, I am still pushing myself to continue evolving as an artist and strive to produce the most meaningful music and art that I am capable.
