Music
Ananta was composed around the same time as Currents, and also uses spectralism to derive pitch material. Unlike Currents, the music is slow and quiet throughout. First Place in the 3rd Annual UnCaged Call for Scores, curated by toy pianist, Phyllis Chen. Performed on the London portion of the Sounding Off Tour, featuring Johannes Moser on cello. (ca. 7 min. toy piano, cello, and Tibetan singing bowl)
Recorded by Sugar Vendil, toy piano and singing bowl; JY Lee, cello; Trevor Gurekis, engineer
A piece for solo violin that examines extremes in playing technique, volume, and register of the violin. Recorded by violinist Rolf Schulte (ca. 14 min.).
Incorporating spectral harmonies, Currents explores the redirection of energy while slowly unfolding and expanding the harmonic palette. Pitch material was derived from analyzing the spectra of different violin harmonics and selecting the most prominent harmonics and overtones. Recorded by Accessible Contemporary Music. (ca. 6 min. flute, clarinet, piano, violin, and cello)
Music for percussion trio incorporating Brazilian influenced rhythm (ca. 3 min.)
Short, aggressive piece that utilizes constant rhythmic shifts and dense harmony to propel the music through a simple form. The quick tempo and interaction in both hands are meant to display the performer’s technique and interpretive skills (ca. 2 min.)
In Dark Masses, Slowly Rising (coming soon)
Scored for vibraphone and multiple other mixed percussion instruments, In Dark Masses… displays the versatility of percussion music from rapid, overlapping rhythms to quiet and reflective. (ca. 10 min.)
Composed in a linear form, Polaris examines new ways of approaching melodic and contrapuntal writing, of which I am continually exploring. It is organized in a way that hopefully evokes extreme emotional results in the context of a narrative. Honorable Mention winner in the 2006-2007 season of Voices of Change Young Composers’ Project. (ca. 8 min, string trio)
The musical result of a modern dance/live music collaboration, the intention was to create a musical score that could be a rewarding listening experience with or without the dance component. Many concepts generated by Polaris are examined with a new perspective that portrays a personal voice. (ca. 8 min, flute, Bb clarinet, Bb trumpet, trombone, violin, cello)
